DWC 100 Women: Wanjira Mathai, Green Belt Movement

Wanjira Mathai is a passionate environmentalist whose tireless work echoes the indomitable spirit of her late mother, Wangari Maathai. Wanjira’s journey is one of inspiration, courage, and unwavering commitment to the planet.

Wanjira Mathai was born into a legacy of environmental activism. Her mother, Wangari Maathai, was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for her work in sustainable development, democracy, and peace. From a young age, Wanjira was imbued with the values of environmental stewardship and social justice, watching her mother lead the Green Belt Movement (GBM) and plant millions of trees across Kenya.

Wanjira’s own activism took root as she witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community-led environmental initiatives. She saw how trees not only rejuvenate landscapes but also empower communities, particularly women, providing them with resources and a sense of agency.

Taking the helm of the Green Belt Movement, Wanjira has championed initiatives that address the intertwined issues of environmental degradation, poverty, and gender inequality. Under her leadership, GBM has continued to thrive, planting millions more trees, restoring degraded ecosystems, and advocating for policies that prioritize sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Wanjira’s journey has not been without its challenges. Leading an environmental movement in the face of political, economic, and social obstacles is no small feat. She has navigated resistance from powerful entities with vested interests in deforestation and environmental exploitation. Additionally, she has had to contend with the broader challenge of climate change, which disproportionately affects developing nations like Kenya.

Beyond her work with GBM, Wanjira Mathai has become a global advocate for environmental sustainability. She serves as the Vice President and Regional Director for Africa at the World Resources Institute, where she continues to push for sustainable development policies and practices. Her efforts have been instrumental in mobilizing international support for climate action and sustainable development in Africa.

One of Wanjira’s most profound impacts lies in her ability to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. She is a mentor and role model to countless young activists, demonstrating through her actions that perseverance, passion, and collaboration can lead to meaningful change. By sharing her story and the stories of those she works with, Wanjira empowers others to take up the mantle of environmental stewardship.

Wanjira Mathai’s vision for the future is one where communities thrive in harmony with nature, where sustainable development is the norm, and where everyone has a stake in the health of the planet.

She envisions a world where the principles of environmental justice guide our actions and where the well-being of people and the planet are inextricably linked.

Wanjira Mathai is more than an environmental activist; she is a testament to the power of legacy, the strength of community, and the enduring impact of dedicated advocacy.

Her work serves as a reminder that while the challenges we face are daunting, the collective power of individuals committed to change is even greater. In Wanjira, we see the spirit of hope and the promise of a greener future for all.
