Dr James Barry was born Margaret Anne Bulkley.

Born in Ireland around 1789, Margaret Anne Bulkley had a brilliant mind and an even bigger ambition. But in an era when women were forbidden from practising medicine, her dreams seemed impossible. That didn’t stop her. With the support of her mother and a few confidants, Margaret adopted the identity of James Barry and enrolled in medical school. It was a daring act of defiance against a society that sought to limit her potential.

James Barry excelled in medical studies, graduating from the University of Edinburgh before joining the British Army as a military surgeon. This was no small feat—even for men of that time. But Barry didn’t just serve; Barry revolutionised military medicine. From improving sanitation to advocating for better conditions for soldiers and civilians alike, Barry was far ahead of their time.
