Packing for Your First International Trip
Share
I still remember the thrill (and anxiety) of packing for my first overseas trip, so I thought I’d share some tried-and-true tips to help you get organised and avoid the dreaded overpacking. Let’s dive into the essentials!
Start with a Packing List
Before you even think about what to bring, create a packing list. This keeps you on track and ensures nothing gets forgotten. Your list will depend on the destination, weather, and length of your trip, break it down into categories like:
Clothing: Mix of tops, bottoms, underwear, sleepwear, and outerwear.
Toiletries: Travel-sized bottles of your must-haves.
Documents: Passport, visa (if applicable), travel insurance, copies of important documents.
Electronics: Chargers, adapters, portable power banks.
Miscellaneous: Books, snacks, and that cute little travel pillow you’ll need for the plane.
Pack Light (Seriously, You Won’t Wear It All)
When packing, the "less is more" mantra couldn’t be more relevant. Trust me, you’ll be thanking yourself when you’re not lugging around a 50lb suitcase. A good rule of thumb is to:
Pack for a week, even if your trip is longer. You can always do laundry!
Choose versatile pieces that you can mix and match.
Stick to neutral colours for flexibility, with one or two bold items to make your outfit pop.
Leave room in your bag – you’ll want to bring souvenirs back.
Roll, Don’t Fold
Save space and reduce wrinkles by rolling your clothes instead of folding them. I know it sounds too good to be true, but this hack is a game-changer. Roll items tightly and fit them snugly into your suitcase. Bonus: you can squeeze in more stuff if needed!
Use Packing Cubes
These little fabric organizers are a traveller’s best friend. Packing cubes not only keeps everything neat but also makes unpacking a breeze. Use them to separate clothing, shoes, and accessories. You'll thank yourself when you're rummaging through your suitcase in search of your favourite pair of socks.
Be Strategic with Your Carry-On
Think of your carry-on as your lifeline in case your checked luggage goes missing (fingers crossed that it doesn’t). Here's what you should always have in your carry-on bag:
A change of clothes, toiletries in accordance with the liquid limits (3.4 ounces or less), electronics and valuables, travel documents (passport, visa, itinerary, insurance), snacks, because airport food can get pricey!
Pro tip: Always pack a tight jacket or scarf – planes can get chilly.
Don’t Forget Travel-Sized Toiletries
As tempting as it might be to bring your full-sized shampoo and lotion, you’re better off with travel-sized versions. This saves space and ensures you comply with airline liquid restrictions. If you’re going to be away for a long time, just buy what you need at your destination – most countries have drugstores with familiar brands.
Research Your Destination’s Weather
Don’t forget to check the weather for your destination before packing! If you're heading to a tropical island, you won’t need that heavy coat. On the flip side, if you're heading somewhere chilly, make sure you pack appropriate layers and warm clothing.
Layer Up!
No matter the season or location, layering is key. Planes can be cold, cities can be unpredictable, and it’s just smart to be prepared. A light jacket, sweater, and scarf will keep you comfortable without weighing down your suitcase.
The Shoes Dilemma
I know, I know – it’s hard to choose which shoes to bring but limit yourself to 2-3 pairs max. You’ll need:
One pair of comfortable walking shoes (this is a must!), one pair of dressier shoes for nights out or fancy dinners, and maybe one pair of sandals or flip-flops if you're heading somewhere warm.
Documents & Money: Keep Them Safe
Your passport, visa, and credit cards are your lifelines. Always keep them in a secure, accessible place. I recommend a money belt or a crossbody bag with anti-theft features. Also, bring a backup credit card and some local currency in case you run into any issues.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
This one’s a no-brainer. Whether it’s flight cancellations, lost luggage, or emergencies, travel insurance will give you peace of mind. Plus, it’s often required for some destinations.
Double-Check Your Airline’s Luggage Policies
Each airline has its own rules about luggage weight and size limits, so it’s important to double-check your airline’s guidelines before heading to the airport. You don’t want any surprise fees or delays at check-in!
Packing for your first international trip doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, some packing hacks, and a good mindset, you’ll be ready for whatever adventure lies ahead.
Remember to leave some space in your bag for new experiences (and a few souvenirs), and most importantly, have fun!
