Kindred Keri: Is It Wrong to Have a Wedding Dress Code?

We are planning our wedding for March next year and have started informing family and friends. We've included a dress code guideline (ie. formal and colour code). Some family members have responded saying this is ridiculous and they should be allowed to wear whatever they want as long as it is formal. Is it wrong to have a wedding dress code?

Kindred Keri says:

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Planning a wedding can be both thrilling and challenging, and it’s perfectly natural to encounter some bumps along the way. When it comes to dress codes, they can indeed stir up mixed reactions, especially from family members who may have their own ideas about what’s appropriate.

It's important to remember that a wedding is a special event where many details reflect your personal style and vision for the day. A dress code helps create a cohesive atmosphere and ensures that everyone feels comfortable and looks their best. Your guidelines, including formal attire and a colour scheme, are there to help set the tone and contribute to the overall aesthetic you’ve envisioned.

However, it’s also crucial to approach this with a balance of understanding and flexibility. While you have every right to establish a dress code that aligns with your wedding’s theme, it’s also important to consider the comfort and preferences of your guests. After all, they’re there to celebrate with you, and their enjoyment of the day is just as important as the look of your event.

If some family members are expressing concerns, it might be helpful to have a candid conversation with them. Explain the reasons behind your choices and reassure them that you value their presence and support. Sometimes, a little compromise or additional guidance on what’s acceptable can go a long way in easing tensions.

Ultimately, your wedding should reflect both your personal tastes and the love and joy of the occasion. With a little empathy and open communication, you can navigate this with grace and ensure that everyone has a wonderful time.

Wishing you all the best as you continue with your wedding plans!
