DWC 100 Women: Neha Mankani, Midwife

Born and raised in Pakistan, Neha Mankani’s passion for healthcare was ignited early in life. She pursued her education in public health and midwifery, driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of women and children. Her commitment to her profession goes beyond the clinical aspect; it encompasses a holistic approach that addresses the socio-economic and cultural barriers to healthcare.

She has seen firsthand the challenges faced by women in marginalized communities – the lack of access to quality healthcare, the absence of proper facilities, and the cultural stigmas surrounding childbirth and maternal health. These experiences have fueled her determination to advocate for better healthcare policies and practices.

One of Neha’s significant contributions is her work with the MamaBaby Fund, an initiative she founded to provide financial and logistical support to pregnant women and new mothers in underserved areas. The fund helps cover the costs of medical care, transportation, and essential supplies, ensuring that no woman is denied the care she needs due to financial constraints.

Working in a country where maternal and neonatal health often takes a backseat, she has faced numerous challenges. From battling societal norms that resist change to confronting bureaucratic red tape, Neha’s path has been fraught with obstacles.

One of the most significant challenges Neha has faced is the stigma associated with midwifery and maternal health in her community. Many view midwifery as a lesser profession, and seeking help for childbirth-related issues is often seen as a sign of weakness. Neha has worked tirelessly to change this narrative, educating communities about the importance of maternal health and the vital role midwives play in ensuring safe childbirth.

Through her efforts, countless women have received the care they need, resulting in safer pregnancies and healthier babies. Her advocacy work has also led to policy changes that prioritize maternal and neonatal health, making healthcare more accessible to those who need it most.

Neha’s story is a story of collective empowerment. She has inspired many to join her cause, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the boundaries of her immediate community. Her work has garnered international recognition, shedding light on the critical issues of maternal and neonatal health in developing countries.

As Neha continues her journey, her vision remains clear: a world where every woman has access to quality maternal healthcare, where no mother has to fear for her life or the life of her child due to inadequate care.
