17 February 2025: Wisdom

James 1:5
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

Wisdom is different from knowledge. Knowledge is information; wisdom is knowing how to use that information in a way that honors God. We can read books, gain degrees, and fill our minds with facts, but without wisdom, all that knowledge remains incomplete. Wisdom allows us to discern what is right, to see beyond the surface of things, and to make decisions that align with God’s will.

I remember a time in my life when I faced a crossroads that felt overwhelming. I was offered a new job in a different city, and while it seemed like a great opportunity on paper, something in my heart felt unsettled. I did what most people would do—I made a list of pros and cons. I analyzed every possible outcome, trying to "think" my way to the right decision. But despite my best efforts, I felt no peace.

One night, feeling frustrated and anxious, I turned to God in prayer. I remembered James 1:5 and asked Him for wisdom, not just clarity or a quick answer, but the kind of divine insight that goes beyond logic. I surrendered my need to control the outcome and simply asked God to guide me.

The next day, seemingly out of nowhere, a close friend called me. As we talked, she shared her own experience of moving to a new city, and her words spoke directly to my situation. She said, "Sometimes the best opportunities aren't the ones that make the most sense on paper, but the ones that give you peace." It was as if God was speaking through her, answering my prayer in a way I never expected.

I realized then that God’s wisdom often comes quietly, through prayer, Scripture, and the people He places in our lives. It’s not always a booming voice or a dramatic sign; sometimes it’s the still, small voice of peace that settles in your heart after seeking Him.

When we rely only on our own understanding, we can become trapped in overthinking, fear, and confusion. But when we ask God for wisdom, He gives it generously and without judgment. He doesn’t hold our uncertainty against us; instead, He invites us to lean on Him and trust that He will direct our paths.

So, the next time you are faced with a decision—whether big or small—pause and ask God for wisdom. He promises to provide it, and His wisdom will lead you in ways that bring peace, clarity, and honour to Him.

Lord, grant me wisdom in all areas of my life. Help me to make choices that honour You and reflect Your love. When I feel unsure, remind me to seek You first, trusting that You will guide my steps. Thank You for Your generous and faithful provision of wisdom. Amen.
