Kitchen Hack: Using Eggshells
By Mike Devlin
In the July issue, I happened to mention eggshells but did not elaborate. Let's do something about that.
As before, you must boil or oven cook eggshells for a minimum of 10 minutes to dispose of any element of possible salmonella, and then allow to air dry. Done that? Good, then let's get umm ... cracking.
Minerals and calcium is the name of the game here.
Bird feed. They love it. Seems weird, I know - think about it - but they love it crumbled up.
New seedlings. Put a small amount of compost in the egg shells. Plant when ready.
Fertiliser. Yup, loves the calcium and minerals.
Slugs and snails. Hate broken pieces getting in their way.
Dirty pans (no, not cast iron, i have covered this one already). Crumbled up in soapy water works as an abrasive.
Chalk. 6 white egg shells, 1tsp of very hot water, 1tsp of flour.
Grind the shells to a powder, add the water and flour, combine, mould into a stick, wrap up, and leave to dry (can take 2-3 days. Can add a food colour for more fun.
Coffee. Do not cook/boil the eggshells. Crunch them up and add to coffee grounds. Eggshells are alkaline, coffee is acidic, so the two work together to create a happy median. No, you don't drink them, but the hot water does the work as it passes through the grounds and eggshells. 1 eggshell is enough for a small cafeteria.
When you know, you know.
