Editorial Update: Finding Beauty in the Frost

Yes! You're here for another issue and I cannot be happier. You would have noticed the changes we've made. All issues are now available on the website. This is so articles can be easily shared and searched. AND if you would like the magazines in different formats, we are working on that and have something for you next year.

For now, as the days grow shorter and the crisp chill of winter settles in, we find ourselves surrounded by a season that is both beautiful and challenging. The frost-kissed mornings, and the quiet hush of the world blanketed in white remind us of the serene beauty that winter brings. Yet, for many, winter can also feel heavy—a time when the cold settles not just in the air but sometimes in our hearts.

Hal Borland’s words, “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn,” carry a truth that resonates deeply with life itself. Just as nature cycles through seasons, so do we. Winter is a powerful metaphor for those moments in life when things feel dormant, uncertain, or even bleak. But within winter’s grasp lies hope, for it is the season that prepares us for renewal.

Winter teaches us the value of stillness. The beauty of winter lies in its quiet moments: the sound of snow crunching beneath your boots, the warmth of a fire crackling in the hearth, or the simple comfort of a cosy blanket on a frosty evening.

These moments remind us that even in the coldest times, there is beauty to be found. The trees, though bare, stand resilient, their roots strong beneath the frozen ground. They are not dead; they are resting, conserving their energy for the burst of life that spring will bring.

Yet, it’s natural to feel a heaviness in winter. The shorter days and lack of sunlight can weigh on our spirits. For some, the season brings feelings of isolation, sadness, or a longing for brighter days. It’s okay to acknowledge those feelings—they are part of the human experience.

But just as winter is a season, so too are our hardships temporary. No matter how long or cold the winter may seem, spring always follows. The darkness is never permanent.

Lean into Rest: Use this time to recharge your spirit. Just as the earth rests in winter, allow yourself to slow down. Reflect on where you’ve been and where you hope to go.

Embrace the Present: Look for the small joys in the season—a quiet walk in the snow, a steaming cup of tea, or the way frost sparkles in the sunlight. These moments remind us that beauty exists, even in the cold.

Trust the Cycle: Life, like the seasons, is a series of ebbs and flows. When you’re in a winter of the soul, remember that it is preparing you for a spring of growth and renewal.

As we move through the winter months, let us find solace in knowing that this season has its purpose. It reminds us to rest, to reflect, and to prepare for the growth that lies ahead. And when spring comes—as it always does—we will be ready to bloom anew.

So, if you find yourself in a winter moment in life, hold onto hope. Remember that no winter lasts forever, and no spring skips its turn. Spring is on its way, bringing warmth, light, and the promise of new beginnings.

Wishing you love, light and laughter.
